How we made a difference in 2017
Barbara McInnes was with the Community Foundation since its inception in 1987, overseeing its growth to what is now one the largest and most highly regarded of Canada’s 190+ community foundations. Barbara was awarded the Order of Canada in 2008 for her contributions as a leader and catalyst for the development of community-based philanthropy in her city, across Canada and around the world. Active in her community, she has been a Governor of Carleton University, President of the Ottawa Estate Planning Council and of the Ottawa School of Art, board member of Impact Hub Ottawa, United Way and numerous other professional associations and voluntary sector boards. Having received many honours and awards for her work, she is now enjoying the next very active phase of her life. Currently she serves as a Director of Shorefast which owns the Fogo Island Inn, among other leading edge social enterprises. She is the incoming chair of the Telus Ottawa Community Board, a Director of the Match International Fund for Women. She is on the Advisory Board of PAL Ottawa which is devoted to assisting aging performing artists who are in financial need. She recently helped develop Refugee 613 to help settle immigrants from Syria, and is a Champion of Compassionate Ottawa which is building a community-based social model of palliative care.
She shares with her husband and daughters a passion for contemporary Canadian art. They have donated over 350 works from their collection to major art galleries across the country.
