How we made a difference in 2017
The Hon. Myra Freeman CM, ONS, MSM, CD, former Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, is the recipient of numerous awards for her philanthropic endeavours and contributions to public life: Order of Canada, Order of Nova Scotia, Meritorious Service Medal, Canadian Decoration, Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals, The Public Policy Forum of Canada Award, The Progress Women of Excellence “Lifetime Achievement Award”, Canadian Israel Research Foundation’s Woman of Action Humanitarian Award, The Richard Ivy School of Business and Women’s Executive Network Award as “Trailblazer” and one of Canada’s 100 Outstanding Women, and the recipient of six Honorary Doctorate Degrees.
Mrs. Freeman is a graduate of Dalhousie University, and as a former teacher, her focus on youth-related issues has been a hallmark of her lifelong commitment to community service. Mrs. Freeman served as Honorary Captain (Navy) to Maritime Forces Atlantic, and currently serves on the Chairperson’s Advisory Group to the Canadian Judicial Council, as Director on TELUS Atlantic Community Board, Historica Canada, Save the Children Canada, the Duke of Edinburgh International Awards and the Board of Governors of Mount Saint Vincent University. Her leadership as Chair of the Nova Scotia Minister’s Panel on Education Review, and former Director of the RCMP Foundation, the International Women’s Forum of Canada, the Advisory Board of Coady International Institute, and the Legacy Committee of the 2011 Halifax Canada Games have allowed her to contribute in many ways to the Canadian and Nova Scotian communities.
